Skechers Finally Refunds $40 Million to 'Shape-Ups' Shoe-Buyers
It's true. Those Kim Kardashian-endorsed, magical "toning" shoes aren't what they seem, and Skechers is finally paying out to the tune of $40 million. If you filed a request for a refund after Skechers settled in a class action lawsuit, the Federal Trade Commission says your check is in the mail this week.

Over 500,000 checks are being sent out to settle charges of false advertising. Last year, the FTC accused Skechers of deceptively claiming that Shape-Ups would help you lose weight and tone your muscles, so you could, of course, look just like Kim Kardashian and Brooke Burke-Charvet, celebs who marketed the clunky tennis shoes.
On Skechers' Facebook page, people who bought Shape-Ups and other toning shoes, like Tone-Ups and Resistance Runner style shoes, say they are beginning to receive their checks, but some aren't getting a full refund for their shoes. Brandy Walleshauser posted a comment on Skechers' page, complaining that she received a refund of $34, but she actually paid more for her shoes. Skechers currently sells Shape-Ups for as much as $85 on its website. According to the FTC, under the settlement, the amount is based on the portion of your claim that is approved.
Skechers isn't the first shoe company to have to foot the bill to consumers for unfounded claims of healthy, fit bodies. Last August, Reebok also was required by the FTC to send out $25 million to approximately 315,000 unhappy shoe-buyers for its similar toning shoes.

Skechers refund checks must be cashed by October 10, 2013, and for those of you who thought Shape-Ups would tone your abs, thighs, and calves but didn't see the results you expected, the deadline to submit a claim has unfortunately passed.
