Teen Brothers Lose Combined 280 Pounds

Finding the inspiration to lose weight comes to people in different ways. Sometimes it's knowing you'll be around for your children. Or fitting in to a particular outfit. Or looking your best for an event.

For Stephen Rice, it was his brother.

"I was inspired to lose weight entirely from my brother," says Stephen. "I saw how much healthier and happier he was when losing weight and saw it as an inspiration."

Stephen just a few months ago weighed 300 pounds, at age 16. Today, as he closes in on his 17th birthday, he's down 120 pounds. The now 180-pound teen says "I had a lot of help from my brother… Losing weight was a great choice and I'm a lot happier and healthier."

His brother, James Rice, was 20-years old when he weighed 370 pounds. Post-high school and trying to decide what was next, James thought "enough is enough, I need to lose weight or I am going to die."

James lead the charge, relying on smaller portion sizes of healthier foods and avoidance of high-calorie junk food like soda, juice and candy. He also started moving, following a mostly cardio fitness regimen with some weight lifting. Today he weighs 210 pounds.

When younger brother Stephen saw the results, he decided to get fit too.

Like James, he didn't subscribe to a pre-baked weight loss plan or take any other drastic measures, he simply changed his habits. He ate healthy food and followed the advice of his brother. He avoided high-fat and high-carb foods and relied mostly on those high in protein. For fitness, Stephen concentrated on cardio in "very long and intense workouts that made me sweat a lot" and supplemented some weight lifting to gain muscle.

These brothers are not only inspiring to one another, but should serve as inspiration to others facing their own weight loss journey. Their age and willingness and ability to lose the weight completely on their own is a message everyone should hear loud and clear. It's never too late (or too soon) to create a healthier life for yourself. Good old-fashioned health eating and exercise will always yield positive results.

"Losing weight naturally is hard work without fat burners and any supplements, but the hard work that is put into losing weight will always pay off in the end when you are a much happier and healthier person," says Stephen. "My advice to anyone losing weight is to never give up and put 100 percent into it."

James says "success never felt so good," and he is considering becoming a personal trainer.
