The Girl's Guide to Running: 7 Surprising Things I've Learned About Jogging This Month

I've told you guys about my new commitment to running--just got back from a jog today, in fact!--and it's funny, I've had so many unusual realizations about running this month--things I never knew or thought of ...

1. People seem to run faster, longer when they run in groups or with a friend. I've been watching people run while I'm out huffing and puffing on my three-times-per-week jogs, and I've noticed something (unscientific) about runners: They run faster when running together. Weird, right? But, without fail, the groups of runners who run together--or just in a pair--pass me far more often than solo joggers, who seem to take a more leisurely pace.

2. Dogs aren't always a runner's best friend. I love my pooch, but she's constantly stopping to sniff things, having to do her business, and frequently wants to sit down and take a rest. While I love giving her lots of exercise, I've realized that she's not the best idea for my exercise.

3. Everybody spits (or is it "expectorates?" out there. I guess it's kind of a gross fact of life, no? I've seen everyone from old men to college gals in the act.

4. Tissues are a good idea. Who wants to be caught with a runny nose on mile three of her jog? Not me! And, because runny noses happen in colder weather--and some people get exercise-induced runny noses--it's a great idea to tuck some tissues in your pocket. 5. Pee the second before you run out the door. What's worse than a runny nose on mile three? Having to pee on mile three. This is why I've learned to make a bathroom trip seconds before leaving.

6. If you "breathe" into a side ache muscle cramp, it actually helps to relieve it.
I've gotten so many different side aches this month, and I hate them. But you know what works? Breathing "into" them. It sounds kind of voodoo, but if you direct your breath in such away that you visualize yourself sending oxygen into the trouble spot, it--oddly--helps.

7. Running increases creativity. I don't know why this is, but after a run, I am hit with so many creative ideas! Take yesterday, for instance: On my cool-down walk, after running 3 miles, I typed myself about 11 emails on my Blackberry--all ideas for articles, birthday gifts for friends, even a concept for a new novel!
