In my sorority house in college, there was this magic mirror in our foyer that the girls and I fought for time in front of because it made us look super skinny. I don't know if it was warped or if it was tilted in such a way or what but we looked bomb in it. A one-last-look before hitting frat row (cool at the time, I swear) was crucial for our going-out confidence.

Now a new product is trying to capture that same deceit: The Skinny Mirror promises to make your reflection appear ten pounds slimmer. With "patent pending" technology, the mirror whittles your image just so-but this novelty doesn't come cheap. The mirrors start at $165 and can run you as much as $675. In some ways, this idea is genius because you'll always feel awesome about yourself. It's a lot like the Mirror of Erised from Harry Potter (nerd alert!) in that it shows us our "deepest and most desperate desire" (to quote Dumbledore)-i.e. to look hot.

But, also like the Mirror of Erised, it doesn't show reality, which can be dangerous. In fact, it perpetuates the idea that skinnier is better, and therefore hotter, which is totes lame.

So, while The Skinny Mirror might make you feel great about your bod at first, we think it's probably a better idea to keep your cash and learn to love you figure as is. Because when it comes to our deepest desires, having true body confidence is what really tops the list.
