  • In honor of Mentoring Month, we take a look at the experience of becoming an hermano or hermana to a child in need of guidance and encouragement.

    Mentoring children into life success

As President of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, Lydia Muniz stays busy overseeing the largest mentoring organization in Florida, but it was not until recently that she became a Big Sister herself.

A few years ago, the CEO became a Big Sister to a very inquisitive 9-year old; the BBBS president and her Little Sister, Izca, began to meet for library visits or chat about school over ice cream. Izca's mother, a newcomer to the US, was delighted. "Big Brothers Big Sisters is not there to replace her mother. [Hispanic] Single mothers may have limitations because of language and income. These may limit her capacity, not as a mother, but as someone who can offer opportunities and open the US to her children," says Muniz who finds herself enjoying a beautiful friendship with this young Latina, in addition to having helped Izca join a program fo

    Brazo de Reina

    Brazo de Reina

Every January 6th, we celebrate "Día de Reyes" in Latin America to commemorate the visit of the Three Wise Men to the Christmas manger. It's the culmination of the holiday season, and for many, the last day of vacation before going back to school and work. On this date, we exchange gifts and cook a traditional meal that includes a rosca or baked sweet bread.

In my family, we call our rosca "Brazo de Reina", a pastry roll filled with strawberries and dulce de leche. The most challenging part of this dess

  • Twelve days after Santa arrives with presents, an unassuming threesome comes to offer their gifts to children, sparking a world of magic and imagination. This is the Reyes tradition we Latinos grew up with.

The Three Kings worship Baby Jesus

The Three Kings worship Baby Jesus

It's been said that the longest Christmas celebration in the world is Navidad in Puerto Rico. Maybe it's because we, Boricuas, mix the American custom of beginning right after Thanksgiving with the traditional Christmas calendar, and then we continue with Las octavitas all through January. The season finally comes to a close on February 2nd when we celebrate La Candelaria, and burn the Christmas tree in a big bonfire. It's a non-stopping fiesta of grand proportions!

But as far as Puerto Rican children are concerned, the season is really about those 12 days between December 25th and Día de Reyes on January 6th (the same days the famous carol sings about). There's nothing like the excitement of waiting for Santa Clós to bring those highly anticipated presents on Christmas morning! I

The "brrrr" factor is amping up now and it's reminding us of the times mami would bundle us up so tight we'd leave the house barely able to walk! But don't worry, invierno doesn't mean you have to stay stuck inside for the next five months. Here are some cool winter date ideas that can heat things up between you and your guy.

    Go ice-skating

This is a timeless classic. Ice-skating is fun, usually inexpensive, and it can be done indoors or outdoors. Just make sure to rock your cutest hat, gloves, and scarf!

  • Financial expert Andrés Gutiérrez gives you tips for sticking to financial resolutions and making 2013 a debt-free year.

Resolve to get out of debt in the New Year

Resolve to get out of debt in the New Year

Most New Year resolutions, like vowing to lose weight or quit smoking, are usually made with great intentions only to be forgotten by the end of January. "Most people's resolutions are dreams instead of goals; goals come with a plan," says financial expert Andrés Gutiérrez, who defines goals as "dreams dressed in work clothes."

So, what does a well-devised financial goal look like? Gutiérrez suggests following some basic measurable guidelines: time-limited, specific, written and measurable. Just saying "I'm going to get out of debt", and leaving it at that does not translate into a successful plan. For example, an individual with $12,000 in debt could manage a goal as follows:

Time-limit: "I'll get out of debt by January 2014" is well limited goal, but, is it realistic? Does it take your current budget into consideration? Maybe taking two years to pay off $500 a mon
