Celebrity makeup artist Andrew Sotomayor has worked on the most beautiful women in the world, including Nina Garcia, supermodel Arlenis Sosa, and Kerry Washington. Today, he's bringing us his 10 Beauty Commandments-commandments he says you must follow or face the punishment of looking like a hot mess.


1. Thou Shalt Wash Makeup Brushes Regularly
Washing your brushes once a week will prevent you from getting acne or skin infections, reduce facial oils from getting into your compacts, and extend the lives of your brushes. Clean synthetic foundation and concealer brushes with regular face wash, but use shampoo for fluffy powder puffs and shadow brushes. Allow time to air dry.

2. Thou Shalt Check Your Foundation Shade Seasonally
Your skin will usually be the lightest midwinter and the darkest midsummer. During those times of year, update by selecting a shade that disappears into your cheek when applied.

3. Thou Shalt Buy Fresh Mascara Every Three Months

4. Thou Shalt Exfoliate "As Needed"
Using salicylic acid or gritty exfoliators on a daily basis can irritate sensitive skin and cause breakouts. Try cleansing your skin with a soft, cotton washcloth, and use exfoliators no more than one to three times per week.

5. Thou Shalt Rotate Your Lip Balms
I'm a lip balm addict, and mixing your lip balms keeps lips hydrated while providing a smooth base for your lipsticks. If you have several different tubes on hand, you'll get the maximum benefit of each product when you rotate regularly.

6. Thou Shalt Keep Hydrated
Two and a half liters of water a day is ideal. By the time you feel thirsty or see chapped lips, your brain and internal organs are already struggling to perform their best.

7. Thou Shalt Try a New Lip Color

9. Thou Shalt Remove Your Eye Makeup Completely
To keep your lashes long and healthy, remove makeup thoroughly and gently every night. Also, remember that keeping on any remnants of eye makeup can age you. Use removal wipes or pads to get rid of all traces of makeup.
