The Only 5 Pieces You'll Need in Your Closet

Shine Latina spoke with celebrity stylist and Panamanian-native Karla Birbragher to discover how to build a full wardrobe with five basic elements and a few trendy pieces. Create these well pull-together looks without spending a fortune.

Start with these five key piecesStart with these five key piecesFive essential pieces
According to Birbragher, begin building your wardrobe with the following pieces:
1. A good pair of jeans: Choose a more versatile dark wash that can be worn either day or night.
2. A button down shirt in basic white
3. A black dress: Choose the style and cut most flattering to your figure. The LBD can go from the office to a night on the town by changing its accessories.
4. A pencil skirt: having at least one in a neutral color, like black or gray, is a must. For a trendier look, get a second in burgundy or royal blue
5. A blazer: an essential element to dress up a pair of jeans; the blazer should be fitted to the body to create an hourglass silhouette.

Trendy piecesThe key is in the accessories
You can create many combinations with those five, classic pieces, but always finish the look with a trendy accessory. Here are some great ideas from our celebrity stylist (clockwise):
1. A statement necklace: The trend calls for chunky necklaces with big stones and lots of color. And the larger the bust size, the bigger the stone, according to Birbragher.
2. The platform pump: Nude, leopard print and black are three trendy pumps to have in your closet now.
3. Belts: Whether leather or metallic, the right belt on a pencil skirt or a pair of jeans completes the outfit.
4. Scarves: A woman can't have enough scarves. This season make sure to have a variety of graphics and animal prints to stay on trend.
5. The clutch or envelope handbag: Choose a document bag large enough to keep both your lipstick and your iPad.
Other accessories to consider: A leather jacket with peplum, a sequined top and a pair of large, fan earrings.

A great advantage to playing with basic pieces is that there's no more guessing when getting ready in the morning. For example, Birbragher suggests pulling three of your basic pieces and adding two trendy accessories for a complete and modern office look. Start with those dark-wash jeans with the white button down shirt and colored blazer on top. Add a leopard print pump, a colorful, chunky necklace, and the outfit is set!

Take your jeans out

Use your office jeans to build a completely different and sparkly evening look. Birbragher suggests dressing the jeans with a sequined top (emerald is the color of the year!) and a leather jacket with a trendy peplum trim. Finish the look with long earrings and a pair of black suede pumps.
