5 Problem Foods To Avoid Ordering on a Date

By Erin Meanley, Glamour magazine

As far as dates go, the dinner date seems to be on the endangered list. More often than not, it gets replaced by "grabbing a drink" or "grabbing a coffee." If, however, you get so lucky as to sit across from a guy and be able to look him in the eye over a candlelit meal, peruse this list of food categories that can derail your confidence (or your entire date!):

1. Foods that are awkward to eat
Remember the three "S"s: salad, sushi, and spaghetti. Salads that aren't chopped are a messy mouthful (beware giant leaves and cherry tomatoes that squirt). Sushi rolls can be so huge that they're awkward to eat. Spaghetti is also a problem (disregard this if you're good at twirling your pasta, but do remember that tomato sauce tends to splash, particularly when you're wearing white).

2. Foods with odors that hang around-or revisit you later
If you read the menu and see the words garlic, onion, marinated, truffle oil, or beans (the "musical fruit"), consider another option.

3. Foods that change your look
I avoid red wine on the first date because it can discolor my teeth. Also, tiny things like poppy seeds can really stand out when they get caught. I always look out for anything that might try to accessorize themselves with my smile. Powdered sugar and BBQ sauce are also difficult to keep off your face.

4. Foods that shout "diet"
Guys don't want to think about your low-carb plan or food issues-whether you actually have them or not. So again, salad screams "weight-conscious," as does asking for dressing on the side. (Stay true to your goals, but why not have fun and indulge on this one dinner?)

5. Foods that don't sit well with you
If you have a sensitive stomach that can't even handle a Happy Meal, avoid all greasy, fried, cream-heavy, spicy, and superrich foods. If he insists on ordering for you, make sure you disclose all of your food allergies first. (This seems obvious, but if you are nervous, or you're caught off-guard by his taking charge, you might not remember.)

What foods do you avoid on dates? Any funny restaurant stories out there? Do men even take you to dinner any more? If you ingest anything, do you prefer dinner, or just drinks?
