It's already the celebrity breakup that'll define 2014: Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin are separating after ten years of marriage. Paltrow announced the news on her lifestyle website Goop.com last night in a post titled, "Conscious Uncoupling" - a very Gwyneth way to approach divorce.

"It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate," she writes in the post, which is co-signed by Martin. "We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate."

"We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been," the statement continues, noting that they are "parents first and foremost" to Apple and Moses. "We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and co-parent, we will be able to continue in the same manner."

According to reports, Paltrow and Martin are currently in the Bahamas with their two children, presumably to protect them as their relationship status makes headlines around the world. This kind of gesture is what we loved about them while they were together: From the beginning, the two stars were a very unique kind of celebrity couple. They famously never walked a red carpet together, and always maintained independent lives even though they had a solid union.

To pay homage to their decade-long romance, we're looking back at their most memorable moments and why they will always be of our favorite Hollywood couples.

She was his muse: Coldplay's 2003 song "Moses" was written about Paltrow months before they tied the knot in a secret ceremony. Martin has said that the song is "about falling in love with the most beautiful woman in the world." They later named their son after the song title.

She was also his lobster: Not to get all Friends about this, but Paltrow was Martin's first real love. He revealed on CBS Sunday Morning in 2011 that his marriage to the actress is the only serious relationship he's ever had. "From being a loser to going out with an Oscar winner?" the musician admitted. "It's a giant leap. Let's face it, it's like winning the lottery."

She was obsessed with him, too: Despite respecting his wishes to (mostly) remain private, Paltrow has shared super-sweet sentiments about her man. When asked by Good Housekeeping last year what is the best decision she's ever made, she replied: "To marry my husband." Also, recently she gushed about Martin's parenting skills. "I chose the best father. Chris is so good to the children and to know that you had kids with such a good man is a real weight off you," she said.

They knew when to show up: Their avoidance of red carpet appearances stemmed from Martin's desire to keep his musical career separate from his personal life. But when Coldplay, his band, was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song this year, he and his wife happily sat together during the awards ceremony, a first for their relationship.

They shared a love of music: Paltrow once said that she and her husband were both artists, which often caused tumult in their marriage. But they also knew when to unite around their crafts. Martin agreed to sing at House of Blues Los Angeles to help raise funds for their kids' school on March 8, nearly three weeks before they announced their separation. Paltrow surprised everyone by performing alongside her husband. "She called the event chair to say she'd like to sing with Chris," a source told Us Weekly. Paltrow selected the tune herself: "Cruisin'," her song with Huey Lewis from the 2000 movie Duets, which was directed by her late father, Bruce Paltrow.

Though they have "consciously uncoupled," there are still many lessons to be learned from their marriage. We just hope they provide a solid basis for their relationship going forward - and we have a feeling they will.
