The other night, a girlfriend and I were catching up at fancy restaurant. She was telling me about the new guy she's seeing; they had their second date over the weekend and it ended almost perfectly.

After a romantic dinner and lots of flirting, he pulled up to her building and parked the car. Then the two love birds made out like crazy. When she finally pulled herself away, she knew they both wanted much more but she said goodnight and went up to her apartment. "Well, why didn't you just invite him upstairs?" I asked. She gasped. Literally, gasped and squealed "What kind of girl do you think I am?!" The table next to us gave me a look.

So when is the appropriate time to invite the new beau into your home for a night cap? As with so many dating milestones, I've always considered this one to be more about feelings rather than timelines. If you're experiencing one of the following, it's probably a good idea to invite him in.

1. You've been on a number of dates (yes, one and two count as numbers!) and things are going really, really well. When he's dropping you off and you both keep gushing about what a great time you had and how much fun you have together, ask him in. You can keep making sweet eyes from the comfort of your apartment. It doesn't have to lead to hooking up, but if it does, you're welcome.

2. He asks to see your place. If you're into him and he's sweet, go for it. For all you know, he could just be interested in checking out your awesome collection of first edition books. What? Literature can be sexy!

3. The two of you are both trying to obviously extend a date: dinner, then a movie, then a coffee shop, then strolling down a quaint street, then browsing the stacks at a bookstore, then drinks. Admit it, neither one of you wants the date to end. It doesn't have to. Ask him over because he won't say no.

4. When you mention your leaky faucet or wonky DVR, and he offers to fix it, say yes and invite him back to your place. If you two completely forget about the repairs once you're inside, no biggie!

5. You're about to get busy in the car. You have a perfectly comfortable bed in your room, don't you? The first time with a new fellow is going to be a bit awkward no matter how you spin it so why complicate things further with a seatbelt buckle pressed painfully against your booty? Invite him inside and have fun. Also, if you're about to drop trou in the parking garage, subway, cab, elevator or lobby of your building, I'd recommend doing the same.

What do you all think? What else would you add to this list? Are you nervous when inviting a guy over for the first time? Has a guy ever turned down the invitation? When and how did you first ask your guy back to your place?
