9 Ways to Survive a Super Long Distance Relationship

Here's how you can survive a really long distance relationship.
Here's how you can survive a really long distance relationship.

I'm in a super-long-distance relationship with a guy who lives in a different time zone. We're talkin' a six hour time difference and sometimes six months between visits. When I leave for work in New York, he's already asleep in Holland-but we make it work. Here's how...

1. Regular Skype Sessions
Set a regular Skype time every day. It might sound clingy, but it works for us. If one of us can't make it at that time, we know we'll make it work the next night. Plus, I don't spend time during the day wondering when we're going to talk.

2. Talk It Up
Don't talk for more than an hour at any given time. That way, you've left some things to talk about the next time you speak. If the convo does get dull, cheer up by planning your first day together again after being apart.

3. Texting Troubles Solved
Get a free text alternative app, like Whatsapp or MessageMe, so that texting doesn't rack up a huge phone bill. Texting internationally, I learned this the hard way! The great thing about these apps is that on top of pictures and videos, you can also send audio messages to you guy.

4. Spice it Up
Speaking of texting, make sure to keep things spicy, over text, the phone, and webcam. You know what I mean! It will never be the same as in real person of course, but it's a great reminder of what you two have to look forward to the next time you see him.

5. His Eyes Only
Set up a private Instagram where only the two of you know the password. This is a great way to keep each other posted on what you're up to during the day. If you decide to get a little naughty, make sure to double check your privacy settings!

6. Distract Yourself
There will be days where one of you is busier than the other. If you find yourself in a lull while your guy is out somewhere having a blast, hit the gym or call a friend for a manicure. It will take your mind off of missing him.

7. Sexy Greeting Cards
This is my favorite tip: Send each other cute, funny, or sexy love notes. Not emails-real mail, people! You don't have to send pages and pages of love letters-just something short and sweet. Etsy is a great place to find creative cards. My BF and I each send each other one a week.

8. Consistency is Key
All in all, the key to making our relationship work is consistency. For example, if I know that I'll see him again in eight weeks, I'll buy eight cards, and watch as the pile becomes thinner and thinner each week. It's a visual marker that soon I'll be out of cards, and back into my man's arms.

9. Sex Toys for Long-Distance
We've yet to try these out, but for long, long distance couples who never get to see each other-behold, the new his-and-hers Zeus and Hera intimate toys, designed specifically for long-distance couples!
