This A Capella Version of "Let It Go" Will Make You Want to Go to Prom

We all remember how stressful the months leading up to high school prom can be. Will he ask, when will he ask, how will he ask? (Or: should I ask, when should I ask, how should I ask?) One Jacksonville, Florida, senior decided to go big and rather bold by enlisting the help of a cappella group Straight No Chaser to ask his friend Megan to prom.

The backstory: Rafael is a big fan of Straight No Chaser, so he emailed their manager to see if they’d sing “Let it Go” to Megan (the two had seen "Frozen" together and she loved the song). The group gets a lot of fan requests, but this one struck a chord. “It wasn’t that long ago that we were in his shoes,” says Don Nottingham, of SNC (he’s the redhead on the top left of the video and, full disclosure, a friend). “OK, so it was actually a pretty long time ago but still, we thought it was cute and Rafael seemed like a great kid.” The group was home from their world tour at the time and just so happened to be doing a gig in Florida. “All the stars aligned for him,” says Nottingham, who once serenaded a girl to ask her to a school dance (“definitely not as cool as Rafael,” he admits.)

The group had had never sung “Let it Go” before so they quickly arranged a rendition, learned their parts, practiced a few times and did their thing. And, if you ask me, Adele Dazeem would be proud. Bonus: Several of the SNC members are dads so they’ve got major street cred with their kids. The group first got together in 1996 as undergraduates at Indiana University and got back together in 2008 after this YouTube video went viral and caught the eye of Atlantic Records executives. They’ve since made it big time and recently collaborated with Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Elton John. And Rafael, of course, who gets serious points for creativity — and confidence (and how about his teacher who let him play the video in class?). I remember being asked to the junior prom by a guy friend and it went something like this: “Um, so like, do you um, want to go to prom together or something?” I was thrilled of course but it pales in comparison to this sweet, grand gesture. Have fun at the prom, you two!
