Beyond the Boudoir

One of the best ways to liven up your sex life? Switch things up. And what's more out of the ordinary than getting intimate outside of the bedroom? Enticing sexual opportunities abound throughout your house, but you may not know where (or how) to get started. Check out the best ways to get busy in each area of your home. Photo by Thinkstock.

The Bathroom

Yes, even washing up can lead to getting down and dirty. "In the shower, face each other and elevate one of your legs on a raised surface, like the side of the tub or a shower bench, as he slides inside," says Amy Levine, sex coach and founder of Ignite Your Pleasure. For deeper penetration, bend your body forward from your hips, so your hands can touch the tub, while your partner stands behind you. If shower sex sounds too slippery, Diana Wiley, PhD, a Seattle-based sex therapist, recommends using the toilet. "Straddle him as he sits on the toilet seat (the cover can be up or down). Face each other and he can easily play with your clitoris for heightened pleasure."

The Kitchen

"Men go nuts for you in the kitchen because they unconsciously associate it with being fed and nurtured," explains Carole Lieberman, MD, psychiatrist and author of Bad Girls: Why Men Love Them & How Good Girls Can Learn Their Secrets. Use it to your advantage! Tammy Nelson, PhD, a certified sex therapist and author of Getting the Sex You Want: Shed Your Inhibitions and Reach New Heights of Passion Together, suggests "the old up-on-the-counter move" (you sit on the counter, and your man stands between your legs). For added adventure, lean against the countertop for support as he enters you from behind for a variation on doggie-style. According to Levine, "the cold surface can add a titillating sensation, but you can use dish towels against the hard surface for comfort and warmth." The refrigerator also offers a cool experience-try a standing position in front of the open fridge door.

The Dining Room

Who needs a bed when you have a table? "If it can hold the two of you, hop on top for modified missionary with your legs over his shoulders," says Levine. If your fella would prefer to stand on the floor for a better thrust, sit on the table's edge and wrap your legs around his hips. Dr. Nelson suggests also using the table for oral sex: He sits in a chair at the table and you lie on your back on the table with your feet facing him.

The Living Room

Your couch facilitates a plethora of positions. "Using it for leverage gives you a whole new type of entry and pressure," says Dr. Nelson. Bend your body over the arm of the couch and have your guy enter you from behind. The cushion of the armrest will keep you comfortable and supported. Or try a variation on the missionary position-lie down and stack a few pillows under your backside to lift yourself for deeper penetration.

The Laundry Room

The washer and dryer can do wonders for your climaxes. "Lying on top of the washing machine when it's in its spin cycle adds vibrations that can contribute to a more powerful orgasm," says Dr. Lieberman. Or try lying on top of the dryer as your man stands between your legs. "It's not just the agitation that makes sex more stimulating-the warmth of the dryer against naked skin adds to the sensuality of the moment," says Dr. Nelson.

The Home Office

Here's some motivation to keep clutter off the desk: "While you bend over and hold the desk for support, your man can enter you from behind," says Dr. Nelson. Bonus: Since he'll be standing and not leaning on his hands, he can manually stimulate you. Or you can both take a load off on that swivel chair. "Try straddling him as he sits, facing away from him. He can plant his feet firmly to keep the chair from rolling, and the tension of him holding the chair still while you control the movement can be very arousing," says Dr. Nelson.

The Entryway

The threat of an unexpected visitor can make the foyer extra-enticing. Try a standing position leaning against the front door-face the door, placing both hands on either side of your body and push your weight forward onto your hands while he enters you from behind, holding your waist. And the mudroom offers the chance for some role-play: "Find a closet and climb in under the coats-you can pretend you're hiding from guests at a party," suggests Dr. Nelson, adding "do it fast and with urgency."

The Stairs

Although the stairs aren't technically a separate room in the house, they're still a great place to get it on. For safety purposes, Levine suggests using the highest step so you have better balance. "Have him lie on the top landing with his back on the floor, so you can get on him in reverse cowgirl while leveraging your legs on whichever steps give you the most support."

The Back Porch

Ah, the great outdoors. "Having sex on the patio, where there's a risk of others seeing or hearing your lovemaking, adds the thrill of danger to the act," says Dr. Lieberman. She suggests doing the deed "in the early morning or at sunset" for more romantic (and forgiving!) lighting. How to go about it? If you have chairs, straddle your man face-forward while he's sitting. Dr. Lieberman recommends covering up with a cozy blanket for privacy from nosy neighbors.
