Boston Bombing Survivor Engaged to Nurse He Met at Hospital

(Newser) - The Boston Marathon bombing left James "Bim" Costello with serious shrapnel injuries and burns so bad that he needed pig skin grafts on most of his right arm and right leg-but it also introduced him to the love of his life.

Costello has become engaged to nurse Krista D'Agostino, who he met when he was transferred to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital a few weeks after the April terrorist attack, the Boston Globe reports. "After sharing a handful of conversations I realized not only how beautiful she was but also what a kind heart she had," Costello writes in a Facebook post quoted by CBS.

"I somehow convinced her to attend a benefit with me, which turned into a few dates, which turned into a few inseparable months," he continues. "I now realized why I was involved in the tragedy, it was to meet my best friend, and the love of my life."

He popped the question in France; he's there with 113 other bombing survivors, first responders, and family members, who are being treated to an all-expenses-paid 11-day "Heroes Cruise" by a Boston travel agency. Three of Costello's friends lost legs in the marathon bombings, and other friends suffered serious shrapnel wounds and burns, WCVB reports. (Last month, another survivor proudly showed off her new prosthetic leg-complete with high heels.)
