Can a Trial Separation Ever Re-Spark the Flame?

Walking away from a long term relationship stings like ripping off a Band-aid in one quick flick. For whatever reason, some people just can't do it. This week an astounding number of celebrity couples are attempting to defy the odds by opting for a trial separation instead of heading straight for divorce.

Only hours after Courteney Cox and David Arquette officially announced their split, Arquette spilled the nasty details to Howard Stern. He admitted they haven't had sex in four months and that "she doesn't want to be the mother to me anymore". I guess she finally sees what all of us were thinking 11 years ago when the totally together cougar committed to this bumbling goofball.

Despite confirming rumors that he's already slept with the waitress who slapped Lindsay Lohan on her birthday, Arquette claims he wants to make it work with his distant wife. The statement they released Monday reads, "The reason for this separation is to better understand ourselves and the qualities we need in a partner and for our marriage."

One can only hope filming their on-screen romance in next year's Scream 4 will drive them back into bed. No matter what messy breakup you might be going through, be thankful you don't have to make out with your ex in front of millions. Can you say more awkward than Dina Lohan's parenting book?

It seems Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman are remaining together in title only because "our commitment to our son Max remains as strong as ever". There was a hint of trouble in their 5 year marriage when Aguilera broke down in tears while performing "You Lost Me" earlier this year. She proposed a last ditch trip to Italy last month, but the Roman holiday ended in the revelation that the romance had fizzled into friendship.

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are taking a break from their normal routine by flying to Israel to try to patch up their differences. Kutcher tweeted, "Asking 4 the energy 2 forge bonds with our similarities & find compromise in our differences." Rumors have been swirling for months that Kutcher has cheated on the fierce forty-something-year-old, but the couple still denies them. One thing's for sure, whether they decide to split or renew their vows (yes there is nauseating talk), they will definitely tweet about it.

Even the glamour of Hollywood isn't safe from the boredom of daily life. We can't help but wonder if there's a point when all relationships go stale. While some couples are strong enough to fix the gaps on their own, others need a fling to remind them why they committed to their ex in the first place.

Has a trial separation ever really worked for anyone? Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are happily back together after publicly trashing each other and filing for divorce. Okay, maybe that's not the best example. Anyone who's watched The Hills can spot her low self esteem from almost as far away as her fake triple Ds.

We'll be waiting on the edge of our seats to see if distance and a hookup can make the bond grow stronger or if these famous couples will join other stars in marriage musical chairs.
