Color Us Impressed! Our Favorite Celebrity Engagement Rings with Colored Stones

by Terri Pous

When Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with Princess Diana's stunning diamond-and-sapphire engagement ring, we had a feeling that colored stone engagement rings were going to make a comeback in a big way.

Two and a half years later, the proof is in the sticky toffee pudding. As we scrutinized the left-hand ring fingers of some of our favorite celebrities to narrow down our favorite rings (it was a tough task!), we noticed the uptick in engagement rings with bold-hued and non-diamond center stones. And with the giant sapphire ring Glee star Matthew Morrison recently gave to fiancé Renee Puente, the trend is really on!

We love the idea of a non-traditional colored engagement ring. Not only do these make a strong personal style statement, certain colors and stones carry significance that make a proposal that much more meaningful.

For example, Elizabeth Hurley's sapphire stone both represents a favorite gem of the British royalty (we, as many others, like to think of her as one regal British babe), and her fiancée's birthstone. The ruby on Jessica Simpson's ring likely represents her July birthday. On the other hand, the striking emerald and diamond engagement ring that Olivier Martinez gave to Halle Berry is more symbolic of the effort it took to make. The ring's 4-carat emerald comes from an old, "closed-down mine in Muzo, Colombia and the color is perfect," jeweler Robert Mazlo said after the pair's engagement in 2012. "The balance between the blue and the yellow in the green in that stone is perfect."

Other rings, like Blake Lively's enviable oval-cut pink diamond and Carrie Underwood's gorgeous round-cut yellow diamond, are evidence that a girl's best friend is even better with a hint of color.
