Do Your In-Laws and Your Parents Get Along?

My girlfriend was telling me last night how her soon-to-be-in-laws and her parents are best friends-they do everything together. They go on "double dates" once a week, and they're even planning a cruise over Thanksgiving. She thinks it's hilarious that she and her fiance introduced them because they're basically inseparable. But I know this is not the norm...

My other friend, S, has an incredibly awkward situation she's had to deal with for years: Her mom and dad can't stand her husband's parents, and her in-laws hate her parents just as much (and they're both super vocal about it). S said the feud started when her in-laws decided to plan a family vacation over her birthday. Her mom thought it was insensitive, and when S asked them to pick a new date so she could be with her family on her birthday, they refused. It all went downhill from there. Once S and F got engaged, the fighting between their parents escalated. They both wanted to plan the wedding, and they fought over who would pick the flowers, what the invitation would say and if the reception would be "Black Tie" or "Black Tie Optional." S and her husband were both too scared to hurt either side's feelings, so in the end, they insisted on paying for the wedding so they could be in control of all the decisions. Instead, they let one set of parents organize the rehearsal dinner and the other set run the Sunday brunch. It's seriously like a soap opera.

Do your parents get along with your in-laws? Or do you have to deal with drama? Do you like your guy's parents, and does he get along with yours?

P.S. Do you call your in-laws "mom and dad?" How similar are you to your mom and your dad? And how often do you call your mom?
