What His Eye Color Says About Him

Aside from the ubiquity of "Brown Eyed Girl" on random playlists everywhere, I feel like you blue-eyed folks always get all the attention while us brownies are blandly forgotten. But science is finally giving us some love. Well, at least it's giving brown-eyed men their day in the sun.

After asking 240 people to rate photographs of 40 men and 40 women with either brown or blue eyes for trustworthiness, researchers found that brown eyes were seen as more trustworthy than blue, especially in men. This seemed kind of duh-worthy to me-blue eyes might be more attention-grabbing, but they're often described as "piercing" whereas brown are described as "warm." This time around, the researchers used the same faces but digitally swapped the eye color of each person. The raters gave the same faces the same level of trustworthiness, despite the new eye color, basically leading the researchers to conclude that it's the face shape of people with brown eyes that's perceived as trustworthy, not the actual color of their eyes. An analysis of the faces showed that brown-eyed men have bigger mouths, broader chins, bigger noses and more prominent eyebrows, essentially making them appear more baby-faced and cheerful (and possibly explaining why they are perceived as more trustworthy).

Huh, that I would not have guessed! But then, I rarely even notice men's eye color. In fact, I had to just go back and look at old photographs to remember the color of one of my ex-boyfriend's eyes. Um, is that weird? Does that say something about me? Don't answer that.

Do you have a preference for men's eye color? Blue? Brown? Green? Hazel? One of two different kinds? Also, am I the only one who barely notices it?
