We Got Married at the Grammys

By Emma Barker

"It's so insane that we're here," Sean Bishop told me. His shock was pretty warranted. It was just one hour before Queen Latifah would marry Bishop and his fiance on stage at the 2014 Grammy Awards.

Last November, musical theater actors Bishop and Taylor Knuth were engaged and planning a small wedding for the fall of 2014. But then, during a performance at his local theater, Bishop got a Facebook message.

"They said, 'We're doing casting for an event and noticed you're engaged.' Then they mentioned it was for the Grammys, but not much else," Bishop told me. He said yes immediately. But by the time they were confirmed a spot in the Grammys mass wedding it was Jan. 6 and the two were on vacation in Hawaii. They had only 10 days to prepare and get to Los Angeles (from their home in Utah) for the rehearsals. "We found this company that makes custom suits in New York, but they needed 14 days," Bishop laughed. "So I'm wearing a suit from Nordstrom by Joseph Aboud and Taylor is wearing a suit from Banana Republic."

Bishop, 27, and Knuth, 21, have been together for two years, and got engaged almost exactly one year ago (Jan. 28, 2013, precisely). Bishop says they were pretty jazzed to find out, just two days ago, that they'd be on stage with Macklemore, and even more so when the Grammys wedding rehearsal revealed that Madonna would be singing "Open Your Heart" too. "Then we heard Queen Latifah would be marrying us and we were so floored!" Bishop said. "We kept thinking, 'Is this for real?' We were kind of surprised when it all checked out."

I spoke with Bishop while he and Knuth were trying their best to relax in the Grammys backstage tent before the wedding. "Paul McCartney was sitting in the front row while we practiced yesterday. Afterwards he congratulated all of us," he said. "It doesn't get much better than that." Then, voicing the thought of every creature with eyes and/or ears: "But I'm pretty stoked about Beyonce."

Hanging out in the backstage tent with the 33 other couples awaiting the ceremony, Bishop said it was one of the most diverse groups he could imagine: a third gay male couples, a third lesbians, a third straight couples, and all sizes, ages, and races. "We're all in this together," he said. "It's all the same love."
