Love is in the air...

When the weather gets warmer and we see more sunlight, the melatonin in our body decreases, which studies show leads to an increase in energy and vitality. Sociologist Dr. Julie Albright says, "That brings about mood changes that make it easier to find a relationship." She points out that the warmer weather also allows us to shed all those extra clothing layers. Showing a little skin makes it easier to read sexual cues from one another. Galtime relationship expert and therapist Dr. Jane Greer says the bare skin is its own turn-on to many, while the melatonin decrease gives us, "an abundance of energy", which serves as a mood adjustment for many of us.

Culture also plays a role in the love that blooms in spring. Dr. Albright say in the winter we tend to hold on to relationships, not wanting to end them before the holidays. Then, as the new year comes and we look for new opportunities, it's easier to let go of something (or someone) not making us happy and search for something else that might make our hearts sing again. Dr. Greer confirms this, telling us, "If you're in a relationship, even if it's not exactly what you want it to be, there's a tendency to hold on to it and to stay put rather than to break out and put oneself out there onto the dating front because it's too alone, it's too dark in winter to start something new." But all that changes with the spring, when our mind and body are more ready for new connections, and when love truly is in the air.
