I know, I know: It sounds really weird, but she's actually got a valid and kind of terrifying point. In a recent interview with Parade, Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence answered the question, "Why do you think so many people relate to the books?" as follows:

"I was watching the Kardashian girl getting divorced, and that's a tragedy for anyone. But they're using it for entertainment, and we're watching it. The books hold up a terrible kind of mirror: This is what our society could be like if we became desensitized to trauma and to each other's pain."

Jennifer is well-known for her maturity; wise beyond her years, she is thoughtful and smart, both in how she approaches her work and in how she deals with Hollywood. This is especially notable when you remember that she's only 21. And really? As much as it pains me to say it... she's kind of right.

We're all ridiculously sick of the Kardashians at this point, and I still think that all this wacky reality television junk is terrible for us as a whole… but if you look at it in another light, Kim's hasty marriage and even hastier divorce ARE a tragedy. What we have is a 31-year-old woman still living in the fantasy world of girlhood who didn't realize what she was getting into when she rushed to tie the knot with a guy she barely knew. Ultimately, it's just a crush that was allowed to grow way, WAY out of proportion-and what makes it even more tragic is the fact that had she NOT been a member of an extremely wealthy family that has made their life into a business opportunity, it's possible that she wouldn't have actually gone through with it. If she had been of more modest means, for example, or if the family wasn't going to profit from a public airing of the wedding, would Kim's Fairytale Wedding to Kris Humphries have happened in the first place? Maybe not. And if it hadn't happened, then the divorce (obviously) wouldn't have happened either.

But it did. And we watched it. And we laughed at it when it fell apart.

I still don't like Kim or the rest of the Kardashians, and I still don't think that they've necessarily made good choices over the course of their "careers." But Jennifer is right: Maybe we ARE becoming desensitized to each other's pain. If Kim's story had happened to someone that you know and care about instead of someone you DON'T know who had foisted themself upon you, would you be mocking it as much as you are now? I probably wouldn't be.

Lenny "Cinna" Kravitz, meanwhile, told Interview that he thinks that if we keep going down the path we're on, we'll end up watching people fight to the death the way the Romans did, except that instead of in a coliseum, it will happen on television-which is exactly what the Hunger Games are. Oh, dear. What on earth is happening to us?

Tell us: Do you agree or disagree with Jennifer's assessment? Why?
