Kate Middleton Engagement Ring: A Bad Omen?

Prince William

proposed to girlfriend Kate Middleton with an oval blue 18-carat sapphire and diamond ring(ring now shown).Sound a little familiar? It's the ring that used to belong to his mother, Princess Diana!

According to CNN, a statement from Clarence House, where William lives near Buckingham palace, says the wedding will take place in the spring or summer of 2011. Ever the gentleman, William got permission from Kate's father before proposing. They were engaged back in October when they went on a trip to Kenya.

Take a look at the rock that Kate showed off today at a press conference to announce their engagement. It's huge and sparkly and gorgeous, but is it a bad omen for their marriage?

Most likely everyone will think it's a nice, sweet, loving gesture that William gave Kate his mother's ring. The Prince of Wales proposed to Diana back in February 1981. Diana actually chose the ring, which cost around $45,000 at the time. The white gold ring features an oval blue sapphire surrounded by a cluster of 14 small diamonds.

William and Kate posed for photos today and William said, "It was my way to make sure my mother did not miss out on today and the excitement that we are going to spend the rest of our lives together."

Still, this ring packs quite an emotional punch, as Diana stopped wearing it after she found out Charles cheated on her with Camilla Shand. If you remember, this ruined their marriage and tore the royal family apart. She and Charles got divorced in 1996, and the ring was last seen in public (before today) the day they announced their separation.

Definitely not a ring that symbolized a fairy tale marriage. Even though this ring represents everything William loved about his mother, some folks are wondering why he would choose a ring that's "cursed."

I don't think that the ring should be looked at as a sign of a failed marriage; it's a royal heirloom that a mother bestowed upon her son. It's a loving gesture by William to honor his mother. But some women just can't accept an engagement ring that was part of a failed marriage.
