The Most Famous Kisses of All Time

In honor of Valentine's Day, we decided to take a look back at some of history's most iconic kisses. From famous movie moments to real-life romances, the following eight smooches are those that continue to be felt 'round the world and in romantics' hearts.

V-J Day in Times Square

Alfred Eisenstaedt's photograph taken in Times Square on V-J Day in 1945 was published in Life magazine the following week. It has since become one of the most famous images-and kisses-of all time.

Gustav Klimt's The Kiss

The Kiss, completed by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt 1908, is considered a masterpiece of the modern period. The painting of two lovers embracing, one of the most popular and recognizable in the world, can now be found on everything from mugs and T-shirts to mouse pads and notebooks.

From Here to Eternity

The beach scene from 1953's From Here to Eternity was pretty racy for its time. In fact, the scene from the novel was toned down considerably to comply with the film censorship laws of the day. An impressive 59 years later, Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr's sandy smooch remains one of the most famous in movie history.

The Royal Wedding

The 2011 nuptials of England's Prince William and Kate Middleton had American audiences awake until the wee hours of the morning. The events culminated with the royal couple's appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace where they kissed as a married couple for the first time-with an encore performance to boot!-to the delight of millions of people around the world.

The Notebook

Nick Cassavetes' 2004 film The Notebook might be the quintessential "chick flick," with its tale of star-crossed lovers kept apart by snobbish parental interference. And, when stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams finally reunite for a passionate kiss in the rain, knees went weak and thousands of crushes on Gosling were born.

Lady and the Tramp

The sight of Lady, the sophisticated Cocker Spaniel, and Tramp, the street-savvy mutt enjoying a plate of spaghetti, only to find themselves connected by a strand of pasta-which leads to a supersweet canine smooch-is our favorite in a string of adorable, iconic Disney kisses.

Spiderman

While filming the upside-down kiss between Spiderman and Mary-Jane for Sam Raimi's 2002 Spiderman was apparently miserable for Tobey Maguire (he said his sinuses were constantly filling up with water), the kiss is probably the most cleverly staged in movie history, which earns it a place on our list.

The First Same-Sex Military Reunion

The US military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy was repealed on December 20, 2011. A day later, two lesbian Navy officers were reunited when Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta's ship docked in Virginia Beach, VA. As is tradition at Navy homecomings, one sailor is selected by raffle to be the first off the ship to greet his or her loved one. This photo captures that moment in 2011, when the first same-sex reunion kiss in US military history became destined to go down as an iconic image in American history.
