How One Mom Got Her Sexy Back

I felt different after having kids. Not just in that new mom who's so in love with her babies kind of way or terrified and clueless kind of way (though I was those too). I physically felt different. Things felt different.

For most of my life I've struggled with self-image insecurities. I can't even blame my kids for giving me baby weight since I was already overweight pre-babies. Still, two pregnancies and three plus years of breastfeeding have taken a toll on my body and my mojo.

There is no doubt in my mind that my husband loves me and desires me, but when you aren't feeling that way about yourself it's hard to switch off "mom mode" and turn on "sexy mode." When you get some coveted uninterrupted alone time with your partner, you want it to really count. At least that's how I feel in these early years of parenting.

It all started with a picture.

A few months ago, a Facebook friend shared a few boudoir photographs she had done. They were classy, beautiful and captured her confidence. It sounded like fun, but my insecurities held me back. Then a few weeks ago our photographer announced that she is now offering boudoir sessions. I contacted her for details and decided it was now or never. Just booking the appointment was a confidence booster! Since I was already familiar with her I knew I'd feel comfortable, not judged.

The whole experience has been incredible. It was the perfect excuse to pamper myself. I haven't bought lingerie since before having kids and I don't know about you, but I don't find my nursing bras the least bit sexy. I forgot how great shopping for flattering lingerie made me feel. Then the day of my photo session I went to the salon for a manicure and to get my hair and make-up done.

For the first time in a long time, I saw more than just my "mom body." I saw myself from a different perspective. Instead of focusing on my graying hair and stretchmarks, I saw a beautiful woman who was comfortable in her own skin. Also, there's nothing like having a sexy secret surprise for your spouse to re-ignite passion in your relationship.

When I'm feeling less than glamorous after a long day with the kids, I can look at my boudoir pictures and remind myself that I still got it. I can be sexy--mom body and all.
