"We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time," the couple told People in an exclusive statement.

It's a shocking turn of events for the couple, who met in a teen club when Thicke was 14, got married in 2005, and had a son, Julian, in 2010. Their love story seemed to defy the odds by any measure, not just that of Hollywood marriages. "We're pretty sure we've loved each other for a few lives," Thicke once said.

In the interest of not getting too down by this sad news, we looked back on their most lovey-dovey moments-and realized why we're in major denial:

1. They survived Miley-gate. After Miley Cyrus' twerk heard 'round the world at the VMAs in August, people were abuzz about her highly sexual performance. She bumped and grinded all over Patton's husband, and yet the actress was remarkably cool. "It doesn't affect me anymore at all," she told E! News Today about the interaction between her husband and the pop singer. "Quite frankly, all my friends dance like that with him," she added. "He's like the guy that you can dance with, 'cause he's safe!" If she could laugh that off, we figured they could work through anything!

2. They maintained date nights. Though they often made some TMI comments about their sex life, there's one thing we could never get enough of: details about their super-cute nights out on the town. "I like to take her out to a fancy, six-course meal that lasts three hours and stare into her eyes," Thicke said in Elle magazine's November issue. "Of course it's a little schmaltzy. There's nothing women love more than an effort." Keeping love alive takes work over time, and it seemed like they'd figured out the secret.

3. They believed in true love. It's no accident that they were together for more than 20 years. Whenever they talked about each other, it sounded like the initial spark was still there, and then some. "I don't know if I would still be alive in some ways if it wasn't for Paula," Thicke told Prestige Hong Kong Magazine last September, noting that she stood by him before the wild success of Blurred Lines. "She's been my rock, my muse, my inspiration, and I love her. The whole way." Patton also spoke to the magazine, saying, "I've been there for his down moments, and he's been there for mine. Life is full of peaks and valleys. Robin has always been a great person to remind me to celebrate now...We're best friends. We laugh a lot."

Well, that made us tear up. No reason has been given for the separation just yet, so for now, we'll keep hoping for a reconciliation.
