Royal Wedding? Was That TODAY?!

By Marianne Beach, GalTime.com

I rolled out of bed around seven this morning, after my husband kissed me goodbye, and headed to the kitchen to make my breakfast bowl of Cheerios. But as I poured my milk, something niggled at the back of my mind--telling me I was missing something. Something that many of my family and friends had set their alarm to an ungodly hour to watch. Some kind of...wedding?

Oh yeah. Will and Kate. Today's the big day.

Maybe this makes me less of a girly girl, but while I enjoyed attending my own wedding last year, I can't say I'm a big fan of watching other people's nuptials take place--even those of close family. Sure, I'm always a little curious about the bride's gown and I'm definitely down with the dancing and cake. But other than that? Meh. I go, of course, out of loyalty to friends and family and to show my support for their joining together, but not, let's be honest, because the ceremony itself is so much fun.

And since, in this case, I don't know the royal couple from a hole in the wall--and I certainly wasn't invited to the big event--I just can't seem to muster up the energy to care, never mind set my alarm clock for three am to crash the wedding on live TV.

But this is like a fairytale!, cry friends. A prince and a princess living happily ever after!

And maybe they will. They seem like a nice enough couple from what I've read. More down to earth than one might expect. And yes, it'd be nice to see them survive and thrive and show everyone how it's done. I could even imagine Diana looking down from Heaven and smiling, thrilled that her son's life turned out so much better than her own. But that still doesn't make me want to watch them exchange rings before the sun rises.

Curious if my utter disinterest was some kind of defect from not enough Disney movies as a child, I turned to Facebook to ask others their true feelings about the wedding of the century.

Melissa says she doesn't care for all the hype. "They're building it up so much and it's just boring. Probably going to read or watch a movie. It's just getting overdone."

And Dottie says she'd rather sleep in. "I was the same way with the Princess Diana wedding-- uninterested."

Elizabeth is angry that the hype is overshadowing more important events going on in our own country. "Like for example the devastation in Alabama from all the bad weather. I'm pretty sure Prince William has no concern over the results caused by the tornadoes or all the dead people."

But Stacy argues, maybe that's why we need a little wedding bliss. "One happy news bit amongst all the storms ripping through the United States, soldiers fighting for freedom, deaths, bad news and more bad news, well, I'll bite."

But, she can't help but add, the coverage is a little much. "Really, truly a vomitous, overly hyped event. Girl and boy get married. Woot for love! Boo for pomp and circumstance!"

And maybe, at the end of the day, that's what's my problem is with the whole extravaganza. Not the idea of a boy and girl tying the knot and starting their lives together. But the circus that overshadows what should be a very personal day between two people in love. The media frenzy, the commemorative plates, the replica rings--all the financial buzzards circling the church, hoping to make a dime off these two young people in love. Maybe that's what's turning my stomach and keeping me vaguely nauseated over the whole event.

So while I'm really hoping in my heart that Kate and Will do find their fairytale happily ever after, I'm going to go about my day without turning on my TV or watching anything on YouTube, thank you very much.

And, you know what? I bet the prince and princess themselves would be just fine with that.
