Settle an Argument: Why Does My Husband Get So Grumpy at the Mall?

By Perri O. Blumberg, REDBOOK

Brent, 38, and Alexa, 36, have been married for 10 years and have two kids. They live in a small town, so for shopping they have to drive a few hours to a larger city. Alexa and the couple's two girls are always excited to make the trip, but Brent couldn't care less. He always goes along anyway, but quickly gets grumpy and complains once they get to the mall.

Alexa argues that he shouldn't bring them all down with his bad mood, especially since these trips could be the perfect opportunity for quality family time. Brent thinks the girls should start going by themselves so he doesn't have to suffer through another shopping trip. Who's right in this situation?

She says: "I love our family outings together, especially when the entire family is there. I don't know why he gets so cranky, especially when we go to stores he likes. Why can't we all just get along?"

He says: "I love being with my family, but I just don't enjoy shopping. Now if we all go to a baseball game together, that's a different story. We all have our own hobbies and interests, and shopping isn't mine. I don't understand why they can't go by themselves."
