In an op-ed piece published yesterday, Washington Post columnists, W. Bradford Wilcox and Robin Fretwell Wilson penned their solution to stopping violence against women. If all the single ladies stop "taking lovers" and instead walk down the aisle, they wrote, they'll be less likely to face harm. They referred to data that showed if a man is married to a woman and is the biological father of their children, domestic violence is less likely to occur, arguing that matrimony makes men tame. "Marriage seems to cause men to behave better. That's because men tend to settle down after they marry," they write. The op-ed acknowledges that of course there are still married men who do hurt their wives and children, but ultimately the numbers reveal marriage makes it better. Throughout the piece, no other causation factors are discussed other than marital status.

It ends, "So, women: if you're the product of a good marriage, and feel safer as a consequence, lift a glass to dear old dad this Sunday." The editor of the section defended the article in a series of tweets, arguing that the paper is "dedicated to publishing a wide range of perspectives about issues in politics and culture."
