Woman Jailed for Loud Sex

A 49-year-old British woman has already spent time in jail for disturbing her neighbors with her high volume level during sex.

Caroline Cartwright has been married 25 years and she and her husband have sex, apparently quite loudly, every night, causing her neighbors to claim sleep interruption that interferes with their daily lives. She was given a 12-week suspended prison term, but if she violates her antisocial behavior code, she will be sent to jail.

First of all, bravo for having sex every night after 25 years of marriage. If her neighbors are accurate, she and the hubs are getting it on from midnight until 3 a.m. (The couple did switch to daytime sex so they wouldn't disturb the neighbors' sleep, only to have complaints filed by the mailman and a woman taking her child to school.)

Cartwright claims her noisiness during sex is involuntary and the antisocial behavior order is in violation of her civil rights:

"I did not understand why people asked me to be quiet because to me it is normal," she explained at a previous court appearance. "I didn't understand where they were coming from ... I may be sympathetic to it, but it is not something I am doing on purpose."

But the judge is firmly on the side of the neighbors, saying her loud lovemaking is disturbing her neighbors and preventing them from enjoying their homes. Additionally, he called her raucous sexual behavior (in her own home, I might add) "selfish."

I really feel for this lady and also wonder if the judge isn't being a little prudish. To call enjoying sex selfish seems like he might be repressing just a tiny bit.

I've lived near noisy neighbors before, and it's a drag. But unless there's violence involved, I would never think of calling the police department and lodging a complaint -- much less dragging them into court and seeing that they face jail time. This just seems incredibly harsh to me, and bizarre.

Also of note, her husband isn't getting even the slightest reprimand. I might argue he's causing the noise. Perhaps the neighbors should be asking him for tips rather than tossing his wife in the slammer.

Do you think this woman needs to be on probation or serve jail time for noisy sex?
