At-home Remedies for Flaky Skin

Combatting dry, flaky skin does not have to be a product intensive process. Instead, you can implement a series of do-it-yourself tips and tricks to keep your skin moist and supple no matter the time of year. In fact, many of the best methods of preventing flaky skin require focusing on the internal workings of the body versus the application of topical treatments.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E deficiency is a major cause of dry, flaky skin. While you can purchase Vitamin E supplements to augment your diet, adding foods rich in the nutrient to your daily diet will lessen the impact on your budget and provide other needed benefits. Wheat germ oil, sunflower seeds, olive oil, spinach, and peanut butter each contain at least 10 percent of your daily value of Vitamin E while meeting other dietary needs, such as the daily requirement for vegetables and the consumption of heart-healthy fats.

Oatmeal

Visit your kitchen cabinets to grab a natural soother for dry, flaky skin. A lukewarm bath generously layered with oatmeal flakes will help treat dry skin and combat nasty rashes. When you scratch itchy flakes of skin, the rash may spread; try an oatmeal bath to limit the spread of a dry skin patch. To take the perfect oatmeal bath, use a grinder to process your oatmeal before sprinkling it into the bath.

Water and Milk

Drinking plenty of water - at least the classic eight glasses a day - helps fight dry skin by keeping your body hydrated from head to toe. When you aren't consuming H2O, opt for a glass or two of moo juice--milk--to provide essential body fats for water absorption. These two beverages coupled with consuming the foods rich in Vitamin E listed above will ensure you keep your skin as moisturized as possible from the inside out.

Oils

Many common kitchen oils, such as olive oil and almond oil, are solid moisturizers. Consider using either of these oils independently or mixed half-and-half to amplify your own body's natural oils. Follow up your oatmeal bath with an oil massage.

Moisturizing Lotions

When you need a bit more oomph to completely banish flaky skin, pick out a moisturizing cream to slather on after a shower or bath or just before bed. Pick a lotion that contains largely natural ingredients and natural oils such as olive oil. Neutrogena ® Naturals Multi-Vitamin Nourishing Night Cream features olive oil, castor oil, corn, and fermented plant matter to help you battle dry skin.

Work on combatting your flaky epidermis by focusing on augmenting your dietary intake with skin-friendly foods and drinks. Don't be afraid to transition common cooking ingredients to your beauty cabinet and be sure to use the right topical moisturizing products. Focus on natural goodness, and you will have soft, silky skin in no time!
