Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that causes redness and flushing, typically on the face. It affects an estimated 16 millions Americans, and most people don't even know that they have it.

While there isn't a cure for rosacea, there are ways to calm and soothe your skin! Dr. Jordana S. Gilman filled us in on ways to tone down redness, reduce flare-ups, and more!

Know The Symptoms: People with rosacea tend to have sensitive skin that is easily irritated, and they are often more sensitive to the sun. There can be facial redness, often beginning at the cheeks and nose, that worsens over time. Some people have facial flushing, especially after eating certain foods. There may also be red bumps that can look like acne.

Know The Triggers: According to the National Rosacea Society, there are certain "triggers" that can cause a flare-up. Some of the most common include medication, sun exposure, emotional stress, hot or cold weather, wind, alcohol, heavy exercise, hot baths, heated beverages, and certain skincare products. This can vary from person to person, so try and keep tabs on what your personal triggers are.

Be Gentle: The most important thing to remember with rosacea is to be gentle. Use non-soap, gentle cleansers and look for sunscreens with zinc oxide because those are less irritating than chemical sunscreens. It is important to use sunscreen every day because the sun makes rosacea worse.

Avoid The "Bad Guys": People with rosacea should avoid products containing glycolic acid or salicylic acid, and should not get chemical peels or microdermabrasion. These will further break down the already delicate skin barrier and only exacerbate rosacea.

Take Control: The time to see a dermatologist is whenever you notice or are bothered by your rosacea. The sooner you treat it, the sooner you can get it under control. There are a variety of prescription treatments for rosacea, ranging from creams to pills.
