How To Winterproof Your Hair

Winter hair can often be described in three words: limp, lifeless, and static-y. But there are solutions! Adir Abergel, senior stylist at the Frédéric Fekkai Melrose Place salon, explains.

Smooth out. If your hair looks dull and dry, the best way to restore softness to it is by shampooing with a moisturizing formula twice a week; follow that with a rich conditioner.

Get a lift. Limpness is typically caused by overactive oil glands, which can weigh the hair down at the roots. For those who have it, it's a year-round problem, but it may be more obvious in the winter, when humidity is no longer plumping up the rest of the hair. So to fix it, first, apply conditioner only from the ears to the ends. Second, use a little dry shampoo, even on clean hair. It'll make your hair look like you got a great blowout. You could also have your stylist cut layers into your hair to create more fullness.

The Top 5 Hair Tips for Gorgeous Hair

Guard against static. Virtually every type of hair will get more static in winter because of the lack of moisture in the air. Get a silk pillowcase, which will go a long way toward solving the problem. If static is still an issue, spray a small amount of hairspray on a natural-bristle brush and smooth it from the roots to the ends. And A
unless you have very fine hair, do a deep-conditioning mask once a week.

Take your hat off. Never put a hat on right after you blow-dry your hair-if the hair is still warm, it will take on the shape of the hat. Make sure your hat isn't too tight; the looser it is, the less your hair will conform to its shape. Finally, look for one lined in silk (or have your tailor line your favorite hat). This will decrease hat head and static at the same time. If none of these tricks work, forget the hat and just wrap a scarf around your head instead.
