We whisper it to our babies with their very first cries, we sing it to them while we kiss their foreheads on nights when they're sick, we mouth it to them from the stands at their first soccer game. It's the foundation of parenthood, a reassuring promise that gives our babies the footing they need in life, "I'm right here. Forever." Even when you can't see me, even when you're miles away from me--I will always be here for you.

All those phrases we hear ourselves constantly saying to our babies and toddlers--things like, "Be careful," "Mama's right here," or "You're OK"--are often greater lessons we want them to remember for life.
