America's Top Baby Names: 10 Most Popular Girls' Names and the 10 Most Popular Boys' Names

The Social Security Administration has compiled all of the names of new babies born in 2012 and released the list of the most popular baby names in America. It turns out that parents' favorite names have not changed much since last year, and none of the top predicted names for 2012 even made the list. For the second year in a row Jacob tops the list of most common boys' name and Sophia is the most common girls' name in the country. Here are the top ten names for boys and girls.

While the rankings of the names have shifted a little bit from 2011 to 2012, nine out of ten of the names for both boys and girls are the same, and the top two names for boys are the same while the top three names for girls are the same with Emma and Isabella just swapping second and third place. The only two new names on the lists are Liam and Elizabeth which bumped Daniel and Chloe out of the top ten.

So what should you do with this list? I've said before and I'll say again that I would use this list to make sure that I didn't name my child one of these names if I were currently expecting. The reason being that when your child gets to school, they'll be swimming in a class of other kids that have the same name (take it from someone who had five kids named Sarah in her first grade class and two of them had the same last name!). Your child is unique and it's nice to have a name that is all their own.
