With school shootings a frequent occurrence as of late, parents are no doubt more concerned about their kids' safety than ever. The issue has already led to the release of bulletproof blankets, and now Christina Thomas, a former San Jose, CA police officer, hopes to further ease parental worry with a bulletproof backpack.

Thomas and her daughter created a line of specialized school bags called AttachaPack. She came up with the idea while working for school security in San Jose. The backpack is entirely customizable, and the bulletproof shield weighs less than a pound and can fit easily into the bag.

With buildable features (which also includes a GPS), parents and their kids can have fun deciding the look and design of the backpack, with the ability to add and remove pouches with ease. There are also various sizes available, perfect for kids of every age group and all the activities they attend.

The innovation is great for children to express themselves and for parents to feel better about sending them back to school. The school supplies list has changed quite a bit from just markers, rulers and binders, but while these issues of safety continue to exist, at least parents know they can do something for their child's safety.
