The Hottest Pop Culture Baby Names of 2013

by Megan Angelo

Courtesy of ABCCourtesy of ABCBabycenter.com dropped a slew of super-interesting baby-naming reports yesterday. I say super-interesting not because I love babies--I mean, I do love babies, who doesn't--but because I just feel like naming patterns are such a fascinating look into our psyches as women and Americans. Taking the word you tag your offspring with from celebrity and pop culture is a tradition that dates back to...well, for sure at least the '80s. Right, various Lukes and Lauras of the world? Anyway, you should click over to Babycenter for its full coverage, but I couldn't resist sharing some of the stuff that captivated me.

Let's talk about the Olivia chicken-and-egg thing.
Look guys, there are two things I spend a disproportionate amount of time thinking about: TV and baby names. So trust me when I say: While Olivia might be holding strong in the no. 3 spot in part because women are loving Scandal (and Law & Order! Let's not forget Mariska), I actually think the zeitgeist surge of the name a few years back might have contributed to Shonda Rhimes choosing that name for the show. This is purely speculation, which reminds me, can you bet on baby name odds in Vegas? 'Cause I'd be down.

In yet another example of how serious Duck Dynasty fans are about Duck Dynasty...
Korie, a.k.a. the name of the Robertson matriarch, jumped 89 percent. 89 percent! And no matter how you slice it, that's an unusual name, so I think Duck's influence is well-proven here.

Can you guess which Girls name made the most impressive run?
Lena is up 26 percent (but Hannah is down 10), and Shoshanna is up 46 percent (but Zosia is up 62 percent!). But the top performer was Marnie, who posted a 62 percent increase--proving that no matter how much they enjoy Shosh's fits and Hannah's mishaps, everybody basically wants their kid to grow up shiny-haired and high-achieving. (Also, Jessa dropped by 11 percent.)

And, welp, Kanye is up 38 percent.
Fine. But don't any of you new parents come crying to me when your kid throws himself on the supermarket floor and shrieks, "I want candy! I INVENTED LEATHER JOGGING PANTS!"
