Someone said no to Madonna. And I'm a little surprised by it!

While we're all talking about the ethics and pros and cons of Madonna's attempt to adopt 3-year-old Mercy James, we may have to hold that discussion until a later date.

Malawi's Supreme Court denied Madonna's request to adopt Mercy. This comes after days of much speculation that the courts would approve the adoption without question, especially after the Malawian government issued statements of support in Madonna's favor.

Judge Esme Chombo's ruling said that the adoption request was denied because Madonna was not a resident of Malawi. In addition, he noted that he felt Mercy was receiving "suitable" care in the orphanage where Madonna first met the girl one year ago.

Madonna has three other children: 3-year-old David (whom she adopted from Malawi), 12-year-old daughter Lourdes and 8-year-old son Rocco.

Should Madonna's adoption request have been granted?
