Being a part of a team is a great way to make new friends and feel like you're a part of something important, but tryouts can be nerve-racking! Equinox trainer Marybeth Weiss and New York City-based personal trainer Melissa Paris will ease your jitters with their tips and tricks for preparing yourself mentally and physically for the big day. By the time the first whistle blows, you'll be ready to don a uniform and high five your future teammates.

Pick Your Sport
"The first thing to consider is whether or not you like to work individually or as a team," says Weiss. "The second thing is to try or watch as many different sports as possible, preferably on the sideline but watching television works too. Finally, try out for the sport that looks like the most fun!"

Practice Makes Perfect
"The more you practice, the more confident you will feel," explains Paris. "Practice with friends, family, and anyone willing to watch, listen, or participate. Focusing on yourself and not comparing yourself to others will help you perform better as the tryout day approaches."

"Try talking to the coach of the sport you're interested in prior to tryouts to get an idea of what types of drills or exercises you should be doing to prepare," suggest Weiss.

"Also, ask athletes who are already on the team what you can do to practice," echoes Paris.

Prepare Your Body on the Day of Tryouts
"A few days before tryouts, make sure you're getting enough hydration, advises Weiss. "A good gauge for water intake is to drink half your body weight in ounces per day. It's also important to get a good night's sleep the night before-a lot can be said for a full night of rest!"

"Keep calm, don't forget to breathe, and let yourself have fun," says Paris.
