Picture Perfect: How to Take Pro Photos of Your Newborn

Tips on Taking Beautiful Photos of Your Baby!
Tips on Taking Beautiful Photos of Your Baby!

Wouldn't it be nice to have a huge budget and be able to hire someone to take stellar photos of your family and new little one all the time, especially there to capture those beautiful, new moments? While getting family photos taken is wonderful, learning how to use what you have to beautifully capture special memories is a must. Now that most people have smartphones and, with that, access to a decent camera it's easier than ever to quickly grab your phone and snap a few (or hundred!) photos of the newest addition to your family. Ever since having Soren, Jon and I have nearly used up all of our storage space on our phones capturing images of the little guy. We might be just a little obsessed.

You don't have to be a professional to get great images! Follow these tips to help improve your photos easily!

1. LIGHTING IS EVERYTHING - If I could offer you just one tip, it would be make sure your lighting is great. Taking images in dimly lit spaces or places where the sun is shining too brightly will really bring down the quality of your photo. Take photos of your baby in a well-lit room, near a window. Make sure there aren't any shadows on the baby's face and that the light looks even. You'll be amazed at how that will instantly improve your photos.

2. GRUMPY MCGRUMPSTER - When is your baby the happiest and the most alert? Use those moments to take photos. You'll be sure to capture all kinds of expressions and special moments when your baby is happy.

3. FUN BACKGROUNDS - Want to spice up your photos? Try laying baby on a fun patterned rug or blanket. Making it so their outfits semi-match is also cute too. ;) If a wall is going to show up in your photos, consider taking photos up against a bright white wall or fun colored wall!

4. ANGLES & PERSPECTIVES - Experiment with different angles and perspectives! Don't forget to take up close shots of their little toes, lips and eyes, pull back for a cute headshot or bum shot, take full-body shots and step way back to get a lot of their surroundings to show off just how small and cute they are.

5. FANCY - Of course, we couldn't wrap up this post without suggesting to dress up baby in a cute hat or accessory to really give your photo some personality. Let your little one hold their favorite stuffed animal or swaddle them in a beautiful scarf or blanket!

It's so fun to capture the newest member of your family. Remember to have fun! We like to make it a goal of taking special photos of Soren once a month, but of course we can't help the almost daily phone photo-shoots when he does something adorable.
