Pregnancy Questions to Ask Your Doctor

When you first learn that you are pregnant, your mind will likely be flooded by questions. The excitement of receiving this news commonly gives way to concern about what the news means exactly and what your responsibilities as a mommy-to-be truly are. While you will likely ask your doctor a plethora of questions during your pregnancy, a few queries are more important than most and should not be overlooked. Here are the ones you definitely don't want to forget!

When Am I Due?

While you may be able to calculate your general due date with some simple math, it is always good to get an official calculation from your doctor. Once you have your first sonogram, your doctor will be able to tell you your due date with reasonable certainty by measuring your growing baby's head and tummy.

What Can I Eat?

Some foods that you commonly eat may not be recommended for expecting mommies. Many doctors ask their patients not to eat certain foods, such as soft cheeses or rare meat, as these foods are commonly the culprit of food poisoning. Food poisoning anytime is bad, but it can be life threatening to the baby if you get it while you are pregnant.

Do You Have Concerns About My Health?

The March of Dimes recommends all pregnant women inquire about their personal health. While you are likely more concerned about the well being of your baby than your own health, you must remember that, while you are pregnant, your health and her health are one and the same. If you suffer from any medical conditions, these maladies could have ramifications for your baby.

What Do I Do If I Need to Contact You ASAP?

Certainly everyone hopes that their pregnancy goes smoothly and that they don't encounter any emergencies, but this is, unfortunately, not always the case. Ask your doctor what you need to do if you start to feel like something is just not right. By asking in advance, you prepare yourself to act quickly if something does go wrong.

What Tests Do You Recommend?

Pregnant women can subject themselves and their growing bundles to a host of tests. Many tests, while recommended by some doctors, are purely optional. Ask your doctor what tests he thinks you should have. Consider his recommendation when deciding if you want a 12-week screening for Down syndrome, an amniocentesis or any other optional tests.

Where Can I Have This Baby?

Some doctors deliver at numerous hospitals, while others offer their services in only one location. Ask your doctor where he delivers at the beginning of your pregnancy. If you just can't stand the thoughts of having your baby at one of these places, switch doctors before you get too far into your pregnancy.
