Teen: Concussions Gave Me Musical Gift

(Newser) - A Denver teen doesn't credit his parents or music teacher for his musical genius, he thanks ... lacrosse. Specifically, concussions he sustained while playing the sport, injuries that he says brought on his musical gift.

Bummed about not being able to play contact sports after the injuries, which brought on epileptic seizures and hallucinations, Lachlan Connors found he took to musical instruments with ease, though his mom says he had no musical talent whatsoever prior to the injuries, CBS News reports, as spotted by Gawker.

He now plays 10 to 13 instruments, including the piano, mandolin, karimba, and bagpipes. The kicker: He can't read music and plays only by ear. "The thought is just a theory-that this was a talent laying latent in his brain and somehow was uncovered by his brain rewiring after the injury," Connors' doctor says. "His brain had to recover from injury and change happened.

And change may have uncovered this ability no one knew he had." As for Connors, "I honestly think something got rewired," he says. "Something just changed, and thank God it did."
