Labor and delivery is a process most women go through to become a mother. While everyone envisions what it will be like, the hours (or days) leading up to meeting a bundle of joy can also bring about a few surprises! We asked moms what their experience was like and here's what they said.

  • The movies always have the climatic scene where a pregnant woman's water breaks. In real life, there are many means by which a mom births her babe. Sixty-six percent of moms said they went into labor naturally.

  • Sometimes babies fly out, and other times infants take their sweet time. Once they were admitted into a labor and delivery room (or if they gave birth at home), 59% percent of moms said it was a lengthy process.

  • Expectant women used to depend on their OB/GYNs to deliver babies, but now on-call physicians often take over. Forty-one percent of moms said the on call doc helped babe make its debut.

  • Estimated time of arrival? When the baby is good and ready. Though a mama-to-be may hope her bundle of joy debuts on his or her due date, it isn't always so. Thirty-nine percent of moms said their babies came late.

  • Bringing home baby is exciting and nerve-racking! Doctors sometimes decide to keep a tot and monitor him for things like breathing issues or jaundice beyond mommy's release date. Eight percent of moms said they had to go back for their babies.
