Top 5 Things I Learned from the Muppets

With the new Muppets movie opening in theaters tomorrow, I've been reflecting on just why Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Animal, and the gang are so important to me. I've grown up with the Muppets guiding me through life, and although truth be told, they are quite wise. Here are the most valuable things I've learned as illustrated through Muppet video clips:

1. Moving to New York City is hard
I was three years old when I saw "Muppets Take Manhattan" and from that moment on I was prepared to move to the city and be successful here no matter what. I saw how the Muppets were willing to give 110% to make their new life work, and I would too if it meant I could one day work at the beauty counter with Joan Rivers like my idol, Miss Piggy. And let me tell you something. Despite my guidance counselor saying a small town girl wouldn't survive in Manhattan, I went to New York University, became a journalist, interviewed Joan Rivers, and now get to play with makeup and write about beauty products any time I want to. Thank you, Muppets, for making me follow my dreams.

2. Being different is a good thing
We don't all look, act, or think the same. Sometimes standing out can feel difficult, and sometimes blending in makes you feel insignificant. But it's important to love being who you are, because you're special. Kermit taught me this lesson at a young age, and it sure was an important thing to learn.

3. Your friends are your family
As we've learned from the motley crew of puppets, Kermit the frog gets along just as well if not better with a pig, a bear, and a weirdo than with other frogs. Accept your pals for who they are and love them like family. A good friend will always be there in the end.

4. Anyone can be glamorous
I grew up thinking Miss Piggy was the most beautiful pig/lady alive, and I still believe she is. You'd never find her in sweatpants and Uggs. Miss Piggy can always be found wearing her satin gloves, jewelry, flattering purple eye shadow, and lots of mascara. She may not be a waif or have an hour-glass figure, but Miss Piggy sure knows how to work it.

5. Never stop dreaming
Because your dreams may lie just around the corner! I've always loved John Lennon's song, "Imagine," but truth be told, I love "The Rainbow Connection" even more.
