User post: Sending Goodies to College Kids

As first published and written for the Alice.com Community Blog . Purely editorial, non-solicited and non-paid. Because I love Alice .

It's been almost two months now since our son has left the nest for his freshman year in college. We are slowly getting over the shock. He is happy and having the time of his life, taking it all in. I'm not sure how much he thinks of us, but I think of him multiple times a day: How was his chemistry test, might he need more laundry detergent and darn it, why isn't he here to take out the trash!

I didn't understand the sentimental value of "care packages" until just now (I stayed in my hometown for my university experience and so never needed that type of "care"). But now that my "baby" is away, it makes perfect sense to be sending him little treats and spoils to let him know that I am thinking of him. He's the type that will appreciate the thought behind each item in the package.

I like to place these orders (just as I did with his essential dorm room supplies) with Alice.com . Because I LOVE Alice. I like to flatter myself by saying that I was an early adopter when their service was just released. Now, I'm avowed devotee of the brand since their service has only gotten better and the choice of product multiplied exponentially.

Plus Alice carries some interesting "indie" brands that will appeal to my college-aged son, it's the perfect place for me to place my care package order for him. I was looking for little "luxuries" as well as essentials that he might need along with some edible treats. Here are some of the items that he will find in the care package he will receive this week:

A pack of Twizzlers and a pack of Tootsie Rolls . Because Halloween is around the corner and because these are so reminiscent of childhood comforts.

The Cocoa Shoppe Lip Balm : Made with "real" chocolate and will keep winter lips moist. The trio pack of Dark Chocolate Espresso Bean, Milk Chocolate Mint Leaf and Cocoa Noir sounds delicious!

Juice Organics Revitalizing Eye Treatment - to use after those inevitable long nights of cramming, especially as finals will creep up on our students before they know it. A tired feeling eye makes one feel more… tired. So this could help.

Quick Milk Straws: because though college students are in big bodies, they are really still just little kids at heart. I know my son will bring these to the cafeteria and be the envy of all his floormates. At least he might be drinking some milk!

Green² Printing Paper: because I am sure that he is about to run out of the first ream that we got him. And I know that because it's heavy to carry around when shopping on foot, this is not something that he is likely go out to buy himself. I like that this is 100% treeless paper.

Energy kicks: These bars/cookies are alternatives to the energy drinks. This is not something that I would want my son to consume every day, but an extra charge might be needed before ominous deadlines. I will have my son try both the 6 Hour Energy and theREVV wafers to see which he prefers. I'm thinking that there are moments when I could use these too…

Instant Hot Cocoa: Because it's getting cold and hot chocolate always feels cozy. All students can find a kettle to add the hot water for this instant warm treat.

Bright Air Freshener: If I had a girl, I would have included this adorable air freshener that releases essential oils from the flower. We need an equivalent "guy" version. Please. In the meanwhile, I got my son the Citrus Magic in Pure Linen natural air freshener to help make his tiny dorm room easier for visitors to cope with. If you know what I mean.

Billy Jealousy Pomade: Because my son likes to style his hair, I thought he would like this cheeky brand of hair pomade. A little expensive, but one of the things that he would not buy himself. There are lots of hair styling products for every type of hair on the site too (I'm thinking Bed Head, Big Sexy Hair, etc for the girls).

MenScience Androceuticals: Also in the "little luxuries" category, I know that my son would not buy this for himself but would appreciate this face lotion as the heated air will undoubtedly dry his skin. Lots of options for the girls as well under the "Makeup Counter" category.

So, I've noticed that my selections are heavy in the chocolate department. We do have a thing for chocolate in this family. And since consuming chocolate releases feel-good endorphins, I think it's a perfectly OK for the package to be biased towards that particular ingredient. Well, ok, only dark chocolate really releases endorphins , but I'm sticking with the theory since to us, chocolate is a perfect icon of love and caring. That, and a good hair pomade.

What would you add in your kid's care package?
