Why Everyone is Bummed the Royal Baby is a Boy

It's a…boy. A little prince arrived earlier this week-healthy, blue-blooded, probably pretty cute, given its genes. So why is everyone so disappointed?

When the news broke via Twitter/press release /gilded easel, there was a palpable sense of shock and some not-so-secret dissatisfaction in the air. As one clever tweeter quipped: "Kate Middleton had a boy? Rude." Of course biologically there was a 50 percent chance that the Baby Highness would have a penis, but what of Kate's supposed "daughter" slip and those pesky British oddsmakers who swore, with no evidence whatsoever, that the Royal Baby would be a girl named Alexandra?! It was suddenly, embarrassingly clear that we're all total suckers-or hopeless feminists.

While it's completely unfair that an hours-old little boy should be to blame for anything at all-above all, we're celebrating that the Royal Baby is healthy and arrived in a safe delivery-His Royal Highness The Prince of Cambridge is already getting a bad rap as a real girl power-killer.

Had Kate and Will had a princess, she would have brought about an historic break in crusty old gender discrimination masquerading as royal tradition: The Queen had ruled to change the 300-year-old law of primogeniture to allow a first-born daughter to become Queen, even if Kate and Will had sons in the future. Previously, the laws of succession dictated that a princess could only ascend to rule as Queen if she had no male siblings.

It was a prospect so exciting, even British prime minister David Cameron implied he was hoping a girl would shake up the stuffy old rules, saying, "Changing the succession is..a big achievement, very important for our country and for all those realms over which our monarch governs."

But no matter now. Gone is the dream of a modern Queen, winning over the world with her Diana and Kate-like grace, decadently clad in designer to boot. Bros will be ruling the British kingdom 'til most of us are dead: Prince Charles, then Prince William, then the as-yet-unnamed Prince of Cambridge.

But since we're all about equal rights at Cosmo, who's to say the Little Prince can't be just as gracious and contemporary a ruler as we'd thought a little girl might be? Not to mention-as handsome as Uncle Harry? Though it's highly unusual, sometimes boys can be just as cool as girls.

At least one person is celebrating the Royal Baby Boy-CNN correspondent Victoria Arbiter, who hinted that, thank heavens, now that she's produced a traditional heir, K-Middy is no longer in danger of an Anne Boleyn decapitation. "This is how brilliant a royal Kate is," Arbiter told CNN. "There are women throughout British Royal Family history who have panicked over not being able to deliver a boy and here we are. Kate did it - first time."

While it's darling to suggest that Kate's uterus is as brilliant as her blowout, science doesn't quite work that way, Victoria.
