Words from the Wise: 5 Things Every Stressed-out New Parent Should Know

5 things every new parent should know
5 things every new parent should know

After having three kids in four years, I can't help but look back at everything that has changed. Specifically, I've been looking at the things that stressed me out as a new mom and why they don't worry me anymore. So much has changed in four years. As a new mom I was nervous, I second-guessed myself, I had little confidence in my decisions and most of the time I felt like I was asking all of my mom friends for advice & help. The third time around it is a whole new ballgame. I want to encourage you new mamas. You new dads. It gets so much easier! As time goes on you will settle into this new role. You will be confident that you are the mama and you know what is best for your child. Here are 5 pieces of advice that will make every new parent's life easier.

1. Remember that you know your baby best
You will get so much advice as a new parent. When I was a new mama, I didn't anticipate how overwhelmed I would be by the the advice! Slowly I started to realize that I am the mama and I know what is best for my own baby. All babies are so different!

2. Don't stress about how much your baby is eating
I can remember worrying so much about eating! Are they eating enough, are they hungry? The third time I was able to rest easy… that baby will tell you when it's hungry! *Of course, if something really doesn't feel right, you can also discuss concerns about your baby's food intake with your doctor!

3. You can handle more than one kid
I think once we start expanding our families it is natural to ask yourself, if you can really give each child the love and attention they deserve. And the answer is yes! You can be intentional with each baby and fill up each love tank accordingly!

4. It's natural to wonder, will the older one be jealous?
I have been through this a few times now and each time my older child has lovingly welcomed the new baby into our family and made the transition lovely! Rest easy…. you are giving your child a new best friend!

5. You're not in this alone!
Everyone asks themselves, do I have what it takes? Before I have given birth each time, I have asked myself this question. Do I have what it takes? You do! You need the encouragement moms & dads… you are taking on a hard & rewarding job and you absolutely have what it takes. Remember that your family and friends are there to support you... and try to find a good mommy and daddy group so you can bond with other parents who share your concerns!
