6 Heartwrenching Pet Rescue Photos from Hurricane Sandy

At the moment, there is no way to determine how many pets remain missing since Hurricane Sandy struck the East Coast earlier this week. However, hopefully numbers will not reach anywhere near the 250,000 estimated pets that were lost during Hurricane Katrina. After Katrina, many East Coast shelters decided to open their doors to pets -- one positive thing to come from that natural disaster. Niki Dawson, director of disaster services for the Humane Society of the United States, says in a Today.com piece that the change was positive during Sandy: "Up until actual storm conditions started, we had heard of literally hundreds of animal-friendly shelters opening. Pets were either being welcomed at human shelters, or other resources were being provided if human shelters didn't welcome pets." Still, a countless number of pets are still lost. One of the best sights during these past few horrific days has been photos of dogs being loaded onto rescue boats and trucks.
