Let me be the first to admit that I had no idea what bisphenol A (BPA) was before I first became pregnant. But when I started seeing "BPA-free" on tons of baby products, I did a little research. Basically, BPA is an industrial chemical that looks and acts like estrogen. It's used to make hard and clear plastics and can be found in a variety of products. Since the 1960s, BPA has been used to make many products we use daily, from sports bottles to food containers and plastic wrap. Exposure to the chemical is concerning because of possible health effects of BPA on the brain, behavior and fertility. While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did put a ban on the sale of baby bottles and sippy cups containing BPA in 2009, it is still on the market.
