Barring Capybaras: 7 Reasons Why Giant Hamsters Aren’t for Everyone

Most people probably shouldn't have pet capybaras. Native to South America and closely related to guinea pigs, capybaras are the largest rodents in the world, weighing in at over 100 lbs and present unique challenges as pets. After the sudden, unexplained death of her capybara, Melanie Typaldos I started the ROUS Foundation for Capybara Veterinary Medicine in conjunction with Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. "I wanted to make sure that the next person to contemplate a pet capybara would have a better idea of what they were getting into than I did." While Ms. Typaldos and many others wouldn't trade their cappies for anything, these exotic pets come with lots of unique challenges.
