What It's like to Birth with a Midwife

Prenatal care with an OB-GYN has become standard in the US, but midwives are also a birth option. In other countries, such as England and Sweden, it's more common to work with a midwife throughout your pregnancy. Recent research suggests that all low risk expectant mothers should be offered midwifery care or request it because it can lead to better birth outcomes. I did not have the opportunity to work with a midwife for either of my pregnancies although my doula was training to be a nurse-midwife. I had the opportunity to talk with a few women about their prenatal care and birth experiences with midwife-led care. Some are first time moms and some have birthed with both doctors and midwives. I really enjoyed hearing their stories and I hope you do, too. - By Darcy Zalewski
